OpenVPN Connect is the “official” application from OpenVPN Inc. and is intended to be more user-friendly for VPN users with limited technical knowledge. It’s less feature-rich than openvpn for Android, which is designed toward more advanced OpenVPN users.
Openvpn for Android is a no-cost open-source client designed by Arne Schwarzbe, enables you to connect with any VPN service that supports the OpenVPN protocol. If your device doesn’t support the pre-configured VPN apps available in the Google Play Store, this is an excellent alternative. The setup is pretty straightforward. You only need to import your VPN profile files (the configuration files have an extension of.ovpn) which you can find on your provider’s website or by contact their live chat support team.
When you’ve imported a profile, you simply tap one of the servers listed to connect to that one. Once connected all Internet traffic is routed through an encrypted tunnel and then directed to the server selected by the application. You can check the status of your connection as well as information in the Status tab. The kill switch is turned on by default. It will disable your internet connection if the VPN tunnel is lost.
The app also has per-app VPN and an on-demand feature that automatically starts the VPN connection when the app is used and continues to operate even after your device goes to sleep or switches networks. However, this feature requires Android 7.0 or higher and may drain your battery more than normal.
